It is hard to hold out much hope these days for Israeli-Palestinian peace. But never, of course, say never. We saw that with Nelson Mandela and the peaceful transition of apartheid to democracy. We saw it with the peaceful end of the Cold War after decades on the nuclear brink and one global confrontation after another. Israeli novelist Amos Oz said it well when he called what Rabin had achieved “an emotional breakthrough,” and how “the cognitive block fell away. In spite of everything, we now face the Palestinians, nation to nation, to discuss the division of the land. That is no small feat. Peace is an experiment that has not yet failed.” Many would dearly want to be able to say more. But were it not for the statesmanship of Yitzhak Rabin, we would be saying even less.
